We started practicing with Twizzlers
(cherry licorice strings) and then used window-shade sash. Some members also invented their
own knots by tying overhand knots over and over and over again.
The overhand knot is just about the simplest knot: It's the one you tie
first as you begin to tie your shoe.
This is a good knot for tying two ropes together. A square knot is two
overhand knots tied one after another, in just the right way. Here are two

A clove hitch is a good knot to tie a rope to a post. There are at
least two ways to tie a clove hitch. We started with this way:
