Knots

We learned a few simple knots as part of the Getting Ready for Camping project.  They included:

Overhand knot
Square knot
Bowline
Clove hitch

We started practicing with Twizzlers (cherry licorice strings) and then used window-shade sash.  Some members also invented their own knots by tying overhand knots over and over and over again.
  

Overhand Knot

The overhand knot is just about the simplest knot:  It's the one you tie first as you begin to tie your shoe.
  

Square Knot

This is a good knot for tying two ropes together.  A square knot is two overhand knots tied one after another, in just the right way.  Here are two Websites with directions for tying square knots (which are also called reef knots):

Bowline Knot

The bowline is another fairly easy knot.  Here are directions for the bowline:

Clove Hitch Knot

A clove hitch is a good knot to tie a rope to a post.  There are at least two ways to tie a clove hitch.  We started with this way:
