This Website identifies some of the trees near our school. It includes the photographic key to leaves we found last Fall, plus a page with links to Web sites that can help you identify leaves and learn more about trees.
Below are links to the four pages in our picture key. To keep things as
simple as possible, the key is based on leaf shape and not much else. For
more sophisticated approaches to tree identification, visit the links page.

| Needle- shaped Leaves |
Oval- or Heart- shaped Leaves |
Lobed Leaves |
Feather- like Leaves |
Once you've found the right leaf shape, you can click on the tree's name to
learn more about it. (The links are to a great,
easy-to-use Web site about Ohio trees. We haven't yet found a
comparable site about Illinois trees.)
We've also put together some leaf scavenger hunts:
| Beginners' Leaf Hunt (4 leaves) | |
| Harder Leaf Hunt (7 leaves) | |
| Camp Fire Leaf Hunt (6 leaves) | |
| Camp Fire Needle Hunt (3 kinds of needles) | |
| Camp Fire Maple Leaf Hunt (3 kinds of maple leaves) |
By the way, the leaf pictures were made by:
| Scanning leaves with a scanner (Visioneer OneTouch 8600). | |
| Cleaning up the photos with a graphics program (Microsoft PhotoDraw2000). (We greatly increased the brightness and contrast to white-out the background.) |
